When God Feels Distant

201: going deeper god practical tips spiritual growth Dec 05, 2022

Have you ever felt like God had abandoned you? That for some unknown reason He decided to stop talking or listening to you but you couldn’t figure out why? Trust me, you’re not alone, sis. I believe that at some point in every believer’s journey, we ask God, “Where are you?!”

I want to assure you that He is still there! God will never leave you nor forsake you, and He is faithful to honor that promise. Remember that Holy Spirit lives in you, and He certainly isn’t going anywhere either (Deuteronomy 31:8, Psalm 33:4, Matthew 28:20, John 14:16-17)

Why does God feel distant when we know He is always with us? Through my own experiences and after walking with many women over the years, I’ve found several reasons this happens. Three of the most common ones are:

1. We are looking for Him in the wrong places

Sometimes we lean more on someone else’s walk with God and we find ourselves seeking them for His voice before seeking Him! This can lead to us inadvertently making someone else our god.

Remember that God speaks to us through His Word and that is the FIRST place to seek Him. Now hear me out - having a community of believers around you is extremely important! However, when we lean on that community more than we rely on God, we may find ourselves with a void because we weren’t searching for Him in the right places.

2. We have strayed away

Whether we realize it or not, there are times when we have actually strayed away from Him. It may feel like we have been abandoned but in reality, we’ve taken a few steps back, making it harder for us to hear His voice or even discern that He has been talking to us the entire time.

The beautiful thing is that not only does God meet us where we’re at, but when we seek Him we will always find Him.

3. He is not distant...but quiet

When someone whispers we have to come closer, right? Sometimes, God whispers to draw us closer. He wants a deeper relationship with us! It feels like He is silent but in actuality, He is talking and we can’t quite hear Him. We’ve gotta lean in.

5 Questions To Consider When God Feels Distant

As we navigate the distance we may feel from God, consider these questions below:

1. What makes Him feel distant? Do I not hear Him or see Him moving in my life?
2. What has my relationship with God looked like lately?
3. How has my prayer life been?
4. Have I tried seeking God?
5. Am I trying to get my "spark" back from others' relationship with Him or my own?

You can rest assured that God has not abandoned you! These questions help us identify if we have strayed away, if we are looking for Him in the wrong places, or if He is getting quieter because He wants us to come closer. Regardless of the situation, be encouraged you are not alone!
